Joseph Arthur - Live @ KDHX 6/1/12Date Recorded: June 1, 2012
Artist / Band: Joseph Arthur
Hosting Show: Gold Soundz
Sound: Jon Valley
The music and art of Joseph Arthur is provocative and vulnerable and always beautiful. Whether performing solo or with a band, he opens doors to his own soul -- and ours.
Signed to Real World Records by Peter Gabriel in 1996, Arthur has built a vast, sometimes imposing body of work. He may still be a cult hero to many, but his songs have graced numerous TV shows and film soundtracks like "The Bourne Identity," including one of his best-known compositions, "In the Sun," which he performs in this live session with a sense of fresh discovery, backed by Russell Simins (of Jon Spencer Blues Explosion) on drums and Kraig Jarret Johnson (of Golden Smog) on guitar.
Arthur's two most recent albums, "The Graduation Ceremony" and "Redemption City," map out just how startling and vast his musical interests and abilities are. The former is a gently-flowing, lush work of folk rock while the latter is a wide-ranging double album (released as a pay-what-you-like set on his website) full of electronic experiments, noise and radical spoken-word pieces.
For this session, along with "In the Sun," Arthur performs a furious, hieratic version of "I Miss the Zoo" from "Redemption City," "Can't Exist" from his 2005 release "Our Shadows Will Remain" and "Invisible Hands" from his classic 2000 album "Come to Where I'm From."
