Joseph Arthur - 'Enough To Get Away'
( 4.5 stars out of 5 )
SINGLED OUT!
by Mark Perlaki on 10/08/2007

Pilotting the forthcoming hotly anticipated 'Nuclear Daydream' album is 'Enough To Get Away'. It's like a lost Kinks gem with Joseph Arthur doing his Ray Davis turn - "...on tiny decks enjoying midsummer weather and friendly company/ and in their picture frames there you and I will be / knowing what we've found...". A mere 2.50 minutes of shimmering pop bringing shafts of sunbeams to our daft summer with gleeful chorus guitar licks - a tune that'll be propping up the pop pickers' charts. Set on replay!

Released 27/08/07 on 14th Floor Records

Singles - new and coming soon!

27th August

Joseph Arthur - 'Enough To Get Away'

Nice Americana stuff that kind of shimmers as it bounces along. It's not a smash hit single, but we quite like the sound.

Single Reviews » Joseph Arthur » Enough To Get Away
Score: 8

Joseph Arthur is releasing two albums in the same day in the UK. One with a backing band and one solo. “Enough To Get Away” is lifted from his solo album “Nuclear Daydream” which is Arthur's fifth full length. When the song first came on, immediately Belle and Sebastian came to mind. The single does have feel of the twee pop masters in it. The tambourine and the smooth base and the more talking type vocal. It is quite a change from Joseph last album but a welcomed song this summer. Joseph is another quality songwriter from out their in Ohio. The water must keep them prolific and on their game out there.

JOSEPH ARTHUR – Enough To Get Away.
Regarded by some as this generation’s Neil Young, Arthur has a strong fan base so this should be successful.
Score: 3 (out of 5?)

Despite the fact that Joseph Arthur has been around for a few moons now, his new single Enough To get Away fits snugly among the latest Brit pop crazes. It's like the Ohio singer has found a little slice of London, but with the vowels, without the fake, working class accent and talk of trainers and pigeon poo.

The track has a very poetic and simplistic ethos. It's a story set to music, spoken honestly and without effect, raw if you like, but not folky.

The REM influence (Michael Stipe once covered Arthur's In The Sun) stands out from the very opening, but vocally, the song is much more relaxed - sweet, like feelings blurted out before it's too late. It's Ray Davies crossed with a melodic Lou Reed, singing to you from the corner of a musty coffee house.

The catchy chorus is nice, but the gem of Enough To get Away is its innocence - and all in just two minutes and fifty seconds.

JOSEPH ARTHUR Enough To Getaway

Set to release his last two albums - Nuclear Daydream & Let's Just Be - simultaneously in the UK, and Enough To Getaway the lead single taken from Nucler Daydream - the more accessible of the pair.

To be honest, Enough To Getaway wouldn't have been my choice as a taster, not that it's a bad track by any means - a mid tempo sub 3 minute workout. Pleasant enough, but a long way short of the best the album has to offer. ***

Joseph Arthur - Enough To Get Away

Rating: 3 stars
(out of 5)

Acoustic guitars and electric influences merge together as Joseph Arthur's magnificently droll vocals entwine 'Enough To Get Away'. It's the perfect song to stick on for a daydream of being stuck to the pool on holiday, cocktail in hand, the sun beating down.

However, the sunshine isn't matched by the lyrics, and take the listener further than a simple love song might. It flips rapidly between different themes, going from insomnia to spiritual diseases while evoking strong imagery at each different step. A complex and rich song, there's more to 'Enough To Get Away' than a first listen would suggest.

'Enough To Get Away' is released as a single through 14th Floor on 27th August 2007.

JOSEPH ARTHUR – ENOUGH TO GET AWAY: Following the critical acclaim that greeted his last album Our Shadows Will Remain (an IndieLondon favourite), prolific American songwriter Joseph Arthur prepares to simultaneously release two albums in September, Nuclear Daydream and Let’s Just Be. The first track to emerge from those is the passionate, folksy Enough To Get Away, a dark tale of life that’s about escaping from the harsh reality of life. The husky vocals are reminiscent of Dylan at times, while the intricate guitar licks are suitably rousing when they want to be. If nothing else, though, the song showcases Arthur’s undoubted ability to deliver telling lyrics that force you to sit down and take notice of what he has to say!

Joseph Arthur - Enough To Get Away
(14th Floor)

Joseph Arthur's been doing this for ten years now, had been described as mad genius and picked enough stars in the review sections of newspapers to build his own broadsheet-based galaxy. And despite being a constant favourite amongst the soundtrack people at American teen dramas, he's still relatively unknown, which is a shame, because in the long list of New York singer-songwriters, he's one of the best.

'Enough To Get Away', the lead single from Arthur's seventh album, won't set the world alight, but it does sound like REM's 'Man On The Moon' for literally four seconds, before proceeding to charm us like The Polyphonic Spree used to do. It sounds like the Spree would if there were only five of them, they rehearsed less and wrote beautiful three minute pop songs instead of ten minute ones.

If you've just come back from Reading/Leeds or Creamfields, there will be few better ways to ease yourself back into the real world than this.

A SUBBA-CULTCHA.COM SINGLE OF THE MONTH

JOSEPH ARTHUR - ENOUGH TO GET AWAY -

With two albums released simultaneously and an art-installation-cum-live-show garnering him rave reviews on the tail end of his last album’s promo, JA has taken what made him so special in the first place and returned with a sense of classicism to his song writing that’s totally engaging. Welcome back Joseph!

Joseph Arthur – Enough To Get Away (14th Floor Records)

While many singer songwriters come and go, some achieving huge success and then vanishing, others never really make it, Joseph Arthur has been a constant throughout. Occasionally popping into the mainstream when his song is featured in an advert or on a TV show, he is somewhat of a hidden gem.

Enough To Get Away is another quality track, and Arthur makes the art of songwriting seem like a simple task. With his trademark acoustic guitars, voice, and sharp observations this is another underrated winner.

Enough To Get Away - Joseph Arthur
14th Floor

Releasing a defiantly summery tune at the tail-end of the British summertime, Joseph Arthur will sound, to the undiscerning ear, like just another smooth-voiced, inoffensive singer-songwriter who favours an acoustic guitar. Luckily that's not all there is to it, as the lush, intricate, but not cluttered production and interesting lyrics lend the song some semblance of individuality, revealing why he has had such an extensive career when compared to some of his counterparts. Unfortunately virtually all memory of 'Enough To Get Away' will disappear seconds after listening, so whether he has the staying power to maintain next month's new album is yet to be seen.

Joseph Arthur: 'Enough To Get Away'
That title is so mischievous, the idea hanging in the mind with manifold suggestions of meaning. Taken from the album 'Nuclear Daydream', 'Enough To Get Away' is a warm wash of a song, which is full of soft sounds that bleed into one another without any let up. Although it is a simple idea and doesn’t seem all that dynamic, the way that the song encapsulates the listener and manages to simultaneously march forward and drift along is utterly charming. Jam-packed with Joseph Arthur’s ideas and the simple beauty of his music, the song quickly sweeps you off your feet. For all the loveliness, though, of the chorus angelic singers, the shine does begin to fade.

JOSEPH ARTHUR - ENOUGH TO GET AWAY
review by Mike Bond, October 2007

" the latest in a long line of effecting and essential material from this truly special artist. "

Another in the ever expanding list of good reasons why Joseph Arthur deserves to be a huge star; ENOUGH TO GET AWAY is the first release from his brand new NUCLEAR DAYDREAM long player.
Slightly more ramshackle and rough around the edges than previous record, OUR SHADOWS WILL REMAIN pointed towards, ENOUGH TO GET AWAY is the sound of Joseph Arthur getting back towards his more louche and lo fi beginnings. Against a rumbling bass line and shimmering guitar work, Arthur croons in that rich lush baritone of his, his distinctive vocals eventually joined by the unexpected addition of a childrens choir and swathes of synthesiser.
With ENOUGH TO GET AWAY, Joseph Arthur continues to prove himself a singer/songwriter capable of impressive things; the latest in a long line of effecting and essential material from this truly special artist.
