Best album of 2007

THE time has come for the annual round-up of the year’s best albums – but while there are plenty to choose from (such as new releases from The Eagles, Hard-Fi and Kaiser Chiefs), we’ve decided to bring you some of the hidden gems that you may have missed out on buying.

Hence, while the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Interpol and Queens of The Stone Age undoubtedly get a mention, what of lesser known gems ...

Joseph Arthur – Nuclear Daydream

What we said: American critics have already hailed it as a masterpiece and it’s easy to see why – the album is a lushly composed collection of 12 songs that encapsulate romance and despair. Packed with some enchanting instrumentation (all delivered by Arthur himself) and driven by his vulnerable, husky vocals (that are sometimes reminiscent of Dylan and Beck), Nuclear Daydream is an utterly enthralling listen that seldom skips a beat.

Best tracks: Black Lexus, Slide Away, Automatic Situation, Too Much To Hide, Don’t Tell Your Eyes, Nuclear Daydream, Don’t Give Up On People

BEST OF 2007: Top Albums

17. Joseph Arthur & The Lonely Astronauts, “Let’s Just Be” (Lonely Astronaut): Teaming up with a full-fledged band brought out Joseph Arthur’s inner frontman on this album of alt-folk steeped in Rolling Stones-ish blues and Bowiesque glam.

Best Singer-Songwriter Albums of 2007
(....)
This year proved a rich one across the entire singer-songwriter spectrum; in addition to those three true standouts, consider the rest of my 2007 top 10:
(....)

* Joseph Arthur and the Lonely Astronauts, Let's Just Be. Admittedly, this isn't the best jumping-in point to discover the artist's Lennon-esque talents -- try "Redemption's Son" or "Come to Where I'm From" -- but for fans, this disc shows the normally delicate Arthur showcasing his rock-and-roll chops to mostly good effect.

Uncle T's Top 10 Albums of 2007

1. Let’s Just Be - Joseph Arthur & The Lonely Astronauts

Joseph Arthur moves from modern-studio folk-pop solo artist to a harder rocking, organic sound fronting this new band that includes Kraig Jarret Johnson (Jayhawks, Golden Smog) and guitarist Jennifer Turner (Fur Slide, Natalie Merchant). This includes collaborative songs and some great numbers from Joe. And this band pushes the limits with some brilliant rock-n-roll anarchy. A very pleasant surprise from Mr. Arthur. This CD has got it all. Can’t wait for the next one.

Best New (to me) Artists
Music is all about discovery for me. Often times I don’t pick up on an artist until well into their career. Here are a few that I came across this year - some who have been around a while, others who haven’t.

Joseph Arthur & the Lonely Astronauts - Catchy hooks and melodies, a smoking hot bass player. What’s not to like?

BEST OF 2007: Backstage@Backstage #10-6 (Taking Back Sunday, Amy Winehouse, Joseph Arthur, Public Enemy, Rage Against the Machine)
I ain’t even gonna front -- 2007 was a tough one here at the Backstage Pass for reasons that are best kept, well, backstage. That said, the year was still filled with too many amazing, memorable moments to list and that’s always a good reason to celebrate. (...) Hopefully, we will all be in for lots more in 2008.

Here are some of my favorites moments from last year:
...

8. Joseph Arthur, The Museum of Modern Arthur, 4.4.07: This was the year Arthur got to show off his frontman skills as he led the Lonely Astronauts, but he is still just as effective alone with his guitar. As he took me on a tour of his new gallery in Dumbo, Brooklyn, he also previewed a stunningly downhearted version of Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the U.S.A.” that he would later debut at a Carnegie Hall benefit and a new song he had written that morning that will hopefully appear on his new album due early in 2008.

(hmmm, somehow that youtube clip seems familiar   )

Somehow, Joe made it into the "highlights of 2007" show on CampusRadio Bonn - Star Song was played as the show's closing title. I admit that I had something to do with that.

Better Late Than Never, Associate Editor Steve’s LaBate’s Best of 2007 Mixes
Thu, Jan 24, 2008 by Steve LaBate
If any of you want to burn yourselves the hands-down-greatest five-CD mix of killer tracks from 2007, here’s your guide. I spent hours painstakingly sequencing this, and it is truly breathtaking, if i do say so myself. My colleagues may disagree on some of the finer points, but, hey, this is my list, ese… get your own! Besides this thing gets personal, as I’ve included some obscure Atlanta/Athens bands (two of which are my own projects, but I figure out of 80-plus tracks, that’s a-OK).
Without further ado....
